NOCTURNAL RITES (SWEDEN)

Founded in 1990 by guitarist / vocalist Frederik Mannberg as NECROMONIC in a more extreme Death Metal vein, NOCTURNAL RITES, from Umeå in northern Sweden, shifted the emphasis to a more streamlined traditional Metal approach. The band cut their only demo to date, ‘The Obscure’ with Mannberg handling lead vocals, in early 1991. Although ‘The Obscure’ attracted label interest the band opted to play the waiting game, not least because of the rapid shift in their music to more melodic pastures. Around this time drummer Tommy Eriksson, also involved with SHADOWSEEDS, decamped and was duly substituted by Ulf Andersson. NOCTURNAL RITES also added a second guitarist, Mikael Söderström. Their new direction also called for a new style of singing too resulting in the recruitment of ex-GOTHAM CITY vocalist Anders Zackrisson. A further series of songs were put down on tape and prompted interest from the Dark Age label which signed the band in 1994. Fred and Nils would start GUILLOTINE in 1995.

Definitely not Death metal. More of a maidenish style. Very good stuff! -Webmaster. This was recorded at our drummer's brother studio outside of Umeå. And yes, it was never officially released. We did a promo with a horrible cover that we sent around to various labels. We actually got a few offers, if I'm not mistaking. Mannberg was handling the vox on this - Nils.
